The challenge: What was the client looking for? What constraints existed?

The client wanted to transform an underutilized garden bed into a semi-private outdoor study space for students to work on laptops and study beneath Berea’s beautiful tree canopy. The design needed to respect existing windows and view corridors, and contend with existing drainage structures, while ensuring privacy for each user through partitions between study tables.

The solution: How did your design address these challenges?

The project began with a student vision team’s concept for semi-private study pods, which inspired our design approach. We leveraged the existing gridlines of the modern architecture to define each semi-private pod, integrating permeable pavers to address drainage and using a refined material palette that blended seamlessly with the natural environment and existing building. We added exterior outlets, low-level site lighting, and privacy screens to enhance functionality and create inviting spaces.

Key design elements or features worth highlighting:

  • Semi-private work areas for individuals and small groups

  • Plenty of outlets at each table for laptops and devices

  • Creative use of existing structures to control costs while enhancing the overall experience.
